Supplemental Security income (SSI) is for low-income, disabled people who are not covered by Social Security or whose Social Security benefits are below a certain amount. As a result, you can still qualify for SSI even if you haven't contributed to a Social Security program. In order to receive SSI, the following must apply to you:

  • You must be physically or mentally disabled due to a condition recognized by the Social Security Administration
  • You must be 65 years or older
  • You must be blind (a central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in better eye with use of a correcting lens)
  • Your income cannot exceed a certain amount

In the state of California, SSI recipients may also qualify for Medi-Cal benefits. Medi-Cal benefits are similar to Medicare benefits in covering certain short-term healthcare needs. However, Medi-Cal covers certain items that Medicare doesn't, though you will likely have fewer options in terms of the medical providers you can go to. Once you are approved for SSI benefits, youR Medi-Cal benefits should be available to use at the same time.

Can Children Qualify for SSI?

Children can receive SSI if they are either under the age of 18 or under the age of 22 but attending school regularly. Additionally, in order to receive SSI, a child must be disabled or blind. The Social Security Administration understands "disabled" to mean any certifiable mental or physical disability recognized by the Social Security Administration which has lasted, or is expected to last, 12 continuous months. The definition for blindness is the same in children as it is in adults. Under the Compassionate Allowance initiative, the Social Security Administration is obligated to provide SSI benefits as quickly as possible to children whose disability is so serious that their condition is immediately recognizable as a disability.

Other Income and Supplemental Security Income

SSI is a needs-based benefit. As a result, your income and family assets must be limited in order for you to qualify for SSI. If you receive contributions from another family member, friend, or other source, the amount you receive will need to be deducted from your SSI benefit. In cases where a person receives support from a special needs trust, however, the money they receive will not reduce their SSI benefits.

"I highly recommend Warmuth Law Offices! After my accident, my car was completely totaled and I could barely walk. With Tammy's help, the insurance company agreed to pay for all my medical treatments and property damage. I never thought I would have been able to afford such expensive treatment or recover the damages done to my car. Warmuth Law Offices got me everything I needed to recover to optimal health and back to work. I will be recommending them to all my friends." - Jake Wong
